City Lodge Group (South Africa) eyes Rwandan Market
CITY Lodge Hotels has taken full ownership of its two hotels in Kenya, signalling a willingness to accelerate the company’s push into select African markets.
On Tuesday City Lodge announced it had bought out its Kenyan joint-venture partner, Fairview Hotel, to take full ownership of the Fairview Hotel and the Country Lodge in Nairobi.
The joint venture — signed in 2012 — was City Lodge’s first step outside South Africa. Initially the plan was for the joint venture to investigate other expansion opportunities in Kenya and East Africa.
In addition to Kenya, he said City Lodge was also looking at opportunities in Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, and was targeting Southern African countries such as Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia. The company already operates a Town Lodge in Gaborone, Botswana.
City Lodge CEO Clifford Ross said the company was pleased with the strategic investment into the Kenyan hotel market. "We have learnt a lot about the region over the past couple of years and are optimistic about development prospects that we can pursue."
